YOU COULD USE SOME SUNSHINE, March 2025
Mimosa is known as a symbol of spring but I had never seen them up close before Emily left them on our doorstep. Wild, rough woody branches covered with intricate leaves and tight berry-like flowers; they refused to be arranged in the vase and looked like a storm was blowing through them.
I found the subject irresistible. It resonated with me, expressing both desolation and consolation. The composition tells a simple story - a kitchen in darkness, an empty chair.
The purple ground is the brightest and simplest colour. It is over-painted with grey shadows, a veiled background, and the dimmed greens and yellows of mimosa leaves and flowers, combining to evoke the sadness at the heart of this painting.
